CHINSALI (23rd January, 2026): Chinsali Municipal Council, through its Public Health Department, has intensified measures to prevent a possible outbreak of cholera in the district, especially during the rainy season when such outbreaks are most prevalent.
The Department of Public Health is currently implementing the following activities:
1. Community engagement: Ongoing Radio programmes are being undertaken; most recently, radio programmes were aired on 12th January 2026 and Monday, 19th January 2026 to sensitise the general public on cholera prevention and the dangers of indiscriminate waste disposal, as well as its effects on the health of Chinsali residents and the environment.
2. Intensified waste collection: The local authority is ensuring that waste is consistently collected from designated dumping areas such as Green Farmers Bay.
3. Inspection of food establishments and shops: Inspections are being conducted to ensure compliance with proper waste disposal systems and good hygiene practices, including the use of water from safe and trusted sources when preparing food for clients.
4. Dissemination of public notices: Public notices are being distributed to raise awareness on cholera prevention by promoting safe water practices (such as boiling water or using chlorine), proper sanitation (use of toilets or latrines and correct waste disposal), and good hygiene (handwashing with soap).
Over and above these measures, the local authority calls upon all Chinsali residents to adopt good hygiene practices at both household and community levels.
These include drinking boiled or chlorinated water and consuming properly cooked and safely stored food, in order to prevent not only cholera but other diarrhoeal diseases in the district.
